Brucellosis: Risk of Infection Through Milk and Cheese

Brucellosis is a zoonotic infection caused by Brucella bacteria. It passes to humans through animal-origin milk and meat products.

Routes of transmission: unpasteurized milk; home-made cheese; butter and ice cream; raw or undercooked meat.

Main signs: joint pain (especially in medium-sized joints); severe pain, sometimes disturbing sleep; cases of arthritis, bursitis, tenosynovitis; fever and weakness; increased sweating; weight loss.

Prevention: consume only pasteurized milk and dairy products; eat well-cooked meat; observe hygiene during contact with animals. Brucellosis must always be investigated in patients with joint pain.
